5 Signs You're Dealing with Peyronie's Disease

Nov 04, 2025
Peyronie’s disease is a common, bothersome, and treatable condition. Here are five common signs you’re dealing with it and the steps we can take together to treat it. Keep reading to learn more.

Peyronie’s disease (PD) affects an estimated 6-10% of people with a penis aged 40-70. While it’s not dangerous or cancerous, it causes bothersome symptoms that significantly impact your sexual function, intimate relationships, and quality of life.

Our expert team at Kane Health in Silicon Valley, Redwood City, and the San Francisco Bay area of California takes a personalized and holistic approach to helping you regain sexual health and function once Peyronie’s disease sets in.

1. Dense tissue and pain

Peyronie’s disease involves the buildup of scar tissue called plaque. Once this tissue forms, you usually can feel a dense band of tissue or flat lumps through the skin.

The dense tissue is often sensitive to the touch, so many people with PD experience accompanying pain. The pain typically intensifies during erections.

In a study involving men with PD,  37% of participants reported having persistent mild to moderate pain. Over 60% of the men experienced painful erections.

2. A bend to your penis

A bent penis, especially during erections, is one of the most prominent signs of Peyronie’s disease. The bend stems from scar tissue buildup, which restricts flexibility.

Your penis might curve to one side, upward, or downward. Over the first six months, known as the acute phase of Peyronie’s disease, the degree of the bend often gradually increases.

3. Penis shortening

Peyronie’s disease can make your penis shorter. Most visible during erections, this symptom stems from plaque buildup, too.

In severe cases, Peyronie’s disease decreases penis length by about 0.5-1.5 centimeters (nearly the diameter of a dime). While treatment may not restore your original length, early treatment can prevent further shortening.

4. Penis narrowing or indenting

Because the scar tissue behind Peyronie’s disease restricts normal blood flow, penis appearance changes besides shortening are common.

Your penis might appear thinner or indented in some places. For some people, this creates an hourglass shape.

5. Erectile dysfunction

Erectile dysfunction (ED) is the clinical term for difficulty achieving or maintaining erections during sex. ED can strike as an early symptom of Peyronie’s disease, even before other obvious signs appear. Or, ED can progress over time as scar tissue increases.
