I'm Embarrassed About Having Peyronie's Disease: Can You Help?

Jul 17, 2026
When you have a bent or misshapen penis due to Peyronie’s disease, you may feel like you’re the only one. Here’s how we restore your comfort and your sex life. Keep reading to learn more from our medical experts.

Peyronie’s disease (PD) is a deeply personal issue where your penis develops lumps, bumps, or curvature due to the formation of plaques or scarring. You may have difficulty attaining or maintaining an erection with PD. Sex can be painful.

In addition, there’s the psychological distress of having to explain your condition to a new intimate partner. Or, the continued stress on a long-term relationship, when you feel embarrassed by your appearance and can’t perform the way you and your partner have come to expect.

Up to 10% of men experience some degree of PD. However, many never seek medical attention and aren’t figured into that statistic. What’s better known is how PD can affect men's moods, self-confidence, and quality of life.

At Kane Health in Silicon Valley, Redwood City, and the San Francisco Bay area of California, our team is committed to your sexual and overall health as a man. That includes having healthy erections and being able to perform sexually with confidence.

How can we help improve PD and bring your sex life back to life? The following are a few of the therapies that our urology expert, Dr. Chris Threatt, MD, may enlist for your customized treatment plan.

Each case of PD is unique

When you come to us for PD treatment, we take a personalized approach to your care. Your treatment plan differs slightly depending on the cause of PD, as well as its physical manifestations.

We also discuss the psychological impact of your disease. Up to 80% of men with PD experience distress due to their condition. Half have depressive symptoms related to PD.

We base your treatment plan on the totality of information we gain from your personal and family history, as well as physical exam, imaging studies, and other tests.

Penile traction therapy

If you’re in the acute stage of PD — meaning that it’s recently developed — you could benefit from traditional penile traction. We may fit your penis with a device that gently stretches the tissue before it grows rigid from plaques and scarring.

Penile traction can help limit the amount of curvature your penis undergoes. It also prevents the loss of length that may occur with untreated PD. You wear the device for a short amount of time each day.

Acoustic wave therapy

A more current treatment – acoustic wave therapy (aka shockwave therapy) – uses the power of sound waves to break up scar tissue and stimulate healing in your penis. Acoustic wave therapy is especially helpful when your PD causes erectile dysfunction (ED).

Comfortable erections require healthy blood vessels. If your penile vessels are constricted due to plaque, your blood can’t flow into your tissues with enough force and vigor to cause a long-lasting erection.

Acoustic wave therapy breaks up the plaque inside your vessels, allowing the blood to flow more freely. The microwounds that the soundwaves cause stimulate a healing process that helps your body build healthier blood vessels, too.

Acoustic wave therapy renews your penile tissues. Your erections are stronger, longer, and you may experience increased girth, as well.

Medications

We may create microdosed medication regimens based on your needs. This could include oral and injectable medications.

We test at intervals throughout the therapy to evaluate your treatment response and adjust doses as necessary. Possible medications include:

Oral medications

  • Nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) to relieve pain
  • Pentoxifylline to reduce scarring
  • Vitamin E and colchicine or carnitine to reduce scarring

Injectables to break up scar tissue

  • Collagenase
  • Interferon
  • Verapamil

Dr. Threatt may also prescribe proprietary medicines that he’s developed over his many years of experience with PD, custom-dosed to your case.

Regenerative therapies

While acoustic wave therapy triggers your body’s healing process, we may augment this treatment with regenerative therapies, such as platelet-rich plasma (PRP).

With PRP, we take a small amount of your arm blood and process it to isolate the platelets, which are rich in ingredients that your body needs to regenerate wounded or scarred tissue.

We inject the PRP directly into scar tissue.

As your cells and blood vessels begin to rebuild themselves after the microwounds caused by shockwave therapy, the PRP supplies them with extra human growth factors and other proteins that are essential for creating strong, new tissues.

In most cases, men start to regain their normal penile structure within 2-3 weeks. We partner with you until you’ve achieved your sexual and health goals.
